Does ERA5 outperform satellite products in estimating atmospheric downward longwave radiation at the surface?

چکیده
Atmospheric downward longwave radiation (DLR) is a key component of the surface energy budget in Earth system. Satellite retrievals and atmospheric reanalysis estimates are two typical approaches to obtaining spatio-temporally continuous DLR product. In this study, we evaluated product from latest ERA5 well-known Clouds Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) satellite retrievals, against high-quality observations collected at 46 Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) stations over land surfaces 9 Global Tropical Moored Buoy Array (GTMBA) buoy stations. The accuracy was found be higher on average than that CERES hourly monthly time scales. Conversely, performed slightly worse CERES-SYN when estimating ocean surface. This first has better surface, demonstrating potentially extensive application prospects for as well setting new challenges quantitative remote sensing research. • validated globally in-situ data BSRN GTMBA comprehensively outperforms surfaces. performs

Periodicity of Downward Longwave Radiation at an Equatorial Location
A good understanding of the diverse mechanisms in the atmosphere is required in modelling the climate. In this study, the diurnal and seasonal patterns of all-sky downward longwave radiation (DLR) at Ilorin (8o 32l N, 4o 34l E), Nigeria were investigated alongside relative humidity (RH) and temperature. The average diurnal pattern of DLR gives an arc that begins by increasing gradually with som...

[1] Several studies have suggested enhanced rates of warming in high-elevation regions since the latter half of the twentieth century. One of the potential reasons why enhanced rates of warming might occur at high elevations is the nonlinear relationship between downward longwave radiation (DLR) and specific humidity (q). Using ground-based observations at a high-elevation site in southwestern ...

[1] Surface solar radiation plays a crucial role in surface energy and water budgets, and it is also an important forcing for land hydrological models. In this study, the downward surface solar radiation (DSSR) from two satellite products, the Fengyun-2C satellite (FY-2C) and the Fast Longwave and Shortwave Radiative Fluxes project (FLASHFlux), and two reanalysis datasets, NCEP-DOE and ERA-Inte...
متن کاملEstimating Surface Downward Shortwave Radiation over China Based on the Gradient Boosting Decision Tree Method
Downward shortwave radiation (DSR) is an essential parameter in the terrestrial radiation budget and a necessary input for models of land-surface processes. Although several radiation products using satellite observations have been released, coarse spatial resolution and low accuracy limited their application. It is important to develop robust and accurate retrieval methods with higher spatial ...
